“All safe, gentlemen, all safe”, says Elisha Otis, founder of the Otis Elevator Company, at the
New York World’s Fair in 1854. Moments prior, he had successfully demonstrated the
reliability of the world’s first safety break by having the hoisting cables of his elevator cut. The
break holds, and Otis’ future as the pioneer in safe people-moving, for 165 years and
counting, is cemented.
Since the company’s earliest days, safety has always been a top priority with us. Otis today
has one of the best safety records in the vertical transportation industry and focuses on a
corporate policy of “safety first”, as well as having implemented several standardised
procedures to ensure the safe performance of every service task and installation.
Otis products are vigorously tested for quality and safety at our testing facilities worldwide,
one of which includes the Bristol Research Center in the United States. which is home to the
Otis Quality Assurance Center and North America’s tallest elevator test tower, which stands
at 117 meters high.
We have maintained our long-standing tradition of quality through our Product Development
Process. During this process every new equipment is granted a “Passport” to the market,
wherein at every step of the way, an entire team ranging from product engineers to senior
executives, signs off on it. More than 20 advanced tests are performed on every major
component, including tests that mimic the worst imaginable operating conditions and that
simulate the rough ride our products might have during the journey from Otis facilities to
installation sites worldwide. Our aim is to ensure a 20 year life expectancy between product
overhauls.
All our efforts at Otis have been rewarded by our three-time Liftinstituut certifications, as well
as our nominations at the 2017 Liftinstituut “Best Elevator and Escalator of the Year”
competition for the following categories:
· The best electrical elevator installation of the
· The best elevator maintenance of the year
· The best escalator maintenance of the year
With a safety-centric history under our belt, we look forward for what’s to come in the future.
